CLIENT INTERVIEWING

Client interviewing is unique among the law school competitions in that you and your partner have  no interaction with another team. It is only you, your partner and the client. The best part for any law student is the minimal preparation required! All teams are provided with a very short memo that provides some indication regarding the client’s issues. However it is vital to keep an open mind, as there are often one or two unusual problems that will arise.

The basic structure of the competition is a 35 minute interview during which you will attempt to elicit as much information as possible in respect of the client’s concerns. One important aspect of client interviewing is the hidden facts that the client may not provide unless directly asked, so listen carefully. You will need to ensure the client feels comfortable and is well informed in regard to their legal position and the range of options available. During the last five minutes you and your partner will be left to reflect on the interview.
