VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF WELLINGTON LAW STUDENTS' SOCIETY
Enhancing the law school experience and promoting educational opportunities for law students at all levels
ABOUT VUWLSS
The Victoria University of Wellington Law Students’ Society (VUWLSS) is a representative group run solely by law students, solely for law students. Essentially, it is for you, run by people like you.
VUWLSS has two major functions. The first is to advance and promote educational opportunities for law students at all levels. This is achieved in a number of ways. VUWLSS presents opportunities for students to hone their legal skills through competitions, lectures and study groups.
The other very important function is to enhance the law school experience – making it more rewarding, dynamic and interesting for students. VUWLSS serves the interests of students outside of the classroom through sell-out social events, engaging speakers, and enviable opportunities for further learning and hands-on experience.
As the most active representative group on campus, VUWLSS aims to enrich your experience studying law at Victoria University of Wellington.
Mental Health and Wellbeing guide
"As law students we are constantly stressed and under pressure. Whether it be surviving the ‘great cull’ of students from first year to second year or trying to work your way onto the right side of the grade bell curve, earning a law degree is not easy. It requires grit, determination, and a real desire to succeed. It almost doesn’t need to be said but maintaining those characteristics can really wear you down."
We, at VUWLSS, are law students ourselves, so we know how important it is to prioritise our mental health and wellbeing. EDUCATION

VUWLSS plays an important role in ensuring that our members receive sufficient and comprehensive support in their academic endeavours. This is achieved through a number of mechanisms.
The Education Officers sit in on Faculty meetings and represent the views and interests of students. Minutes and related documents from these meetings are available to download online from our member’s area. Other resources available for download include education-related publications, "the Insider’s Guide to Law School" and a review of 300-level elective papers.
Our 200-level Study Groups provide a unique, student-driven approach to group study and are open to all members completing their 200-level papers.
Additionally, VUWLSS is proud to promote and support educational opportunities of our partners and the broader University organisations. More information on some of these opportunities is available on this website.
We are here to advocate on behalf of your academic needs. Never hesitate to contact us about a concern or opportunity. If you would like to get in touch with the VUWLSS Education Officers, send them an email at .

Educational initiatives

The wellbeing and equity officers ensure that VUWLSS looks after the well-being of our students and builds meaningful relationships with representative groups. We understand that not everyone comes to OGB with the same background and experience but VUWLSS wants to accommodate these differences. As your student representatives, we need to be inclusive and actively addressing these societal differences.

COMPETITIONS
Competitions provide an opportunity for VUWLSS members to hone their legal skills through practical experience. They involve real and tangible application of the law to simulated scenarios. Competing will only extend your legal knowledge.
VUWLSS organises and runs four main competitions annually: mooting, negotiation, client interviewing and witness examination. These events are open to all law students. Additionally, VUWLSS runs a mooting, client interviewing and negotiation competition specifically for 200-level students. VUWLSS runs competition training sessions targeted at both beginner and advanced levels to foster professional and personal development.
Competing in legal competitions carries a lot of prestige both within the University and the wider legal industry. Winners represent Victoria University of Wellington at the New Zealand Law Students’ Association national competitions. Opportunities to attend a number of international competitions are also available to VUWLSS members.
VUWLSS Competitions has their own Facebook page where you can find more information about competitions during the year! Be sure to check it out here.

Careers
Someone once said that cher once said "Do you believe in life after law (School)?" We, at vuwlss, say yes! Our careers officer will strive to aid in the preparation of students for law school by organising careers events where students can connect with members of the legal profession and receive mentoring about how to achieve a successful career in various areas of law.
